Regular physical activity is an important,
but often difficult, component of diabetes self-management.
Clients may struggle with knowing how to take the first steps
toward finding an exercise program that is right for them.
Prior to beginning any exercise program, clients are urged
to visit their primary healthcare provider for a physical
exam. Our nurse educators then team up with local exercise
specialists to help individuals design an exercise plan that
fits into their daily and weekly schedules.
When helping a client plan their exercise program, we stress
certain aspects of care:
Exercise and the cardiovascular system
Finding an activity that is enjoyable
Carrying identification and safety issues
Monitoring blood glucose levels around activity
Staying motivated
Clients have the option of one-on-one sessions to develop
their exercise program or attending a group session to learn
about the benefits of regular activity. All sessions are available
in English and in Spanish.
The benefits of consistent activity for those with diabetes
or pre-diabetes are:
|
Manage or reduce weight if needed |
|
Lower blood glucose levels, thus lowering the potential
for complications |
|
Reduce risk of heart disease and stroke and improve
circulation |
|
Increase insulin sensitivity, reducing the amount of
insulin needed |
|
Decrease stress and depression |
|
Strengthen muscles, joints, and bones |
|
Improve sleep patterns |
|
Increase energy |
|
Increase overall sense of well-being |
We believe if clients enjoy the activities they are involved
in, they will remain motivated and achieve better results. |
